If you have a regular job and earn extra through freelancing, reselling services, tutoring, or app work, the side income is taxed on top of your salary. That’s the key difference from full-time freelancers: your paycheck has already used up the lower tax brackets, so every side-hustle dollar is taxed at your top rate, plus self-employment tax.
Here’s what that looks like in 2026, and the easiest way to pay it.
In short: How side hustle income is taxed on top of a W-2 salary in 2026, with a table by salary, and how to cover it with W-4 withholding instead of quarterly payments.
How side income is taxed
- Self-employment tax on your side profit: 15.3% × 92.35%, about 14.1% of profit. It applies once net earnings reach $400. If your salary is above the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500, only the 2.9% Medicare part applies, because the wage base counts your W-2 wages first.
- Federal income tax at your marginal bracket, since your salary already fills the lower ones. For many people that’s 22% or 24%.
- State income tax, if your state has one.
The QBI deduction (up to 20% of qualified business income) and the deduction for half of SE tax soften the income tax part a little. See the QBI deduction guide.
2026 table: extra federal tax on side-hustle profit
Single filer, standard deduction, QBI deduction included, no state tax. “Extra tax” is the increase over what you’d owe on the salary alone.
| W-2 salary | Side profit | SE tax | Extra income tax | Total extra tax | Share of side profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $10,000 | $1,413 | $892 | $2,305 | 23.1% |
| $50,000 | $20,000 | $2,826 | $1,784 | $4,610 | 23.1% |
| $80,000 | $10,000 | $1,413 | $1,636 | $3,049 | 30.5% |
| $80,000 | $20,000 | $2,826 | $3,271 | $6,097 | 30.5% |
| $120,000 | $10,000 | $1,413 | $1,748 | $3,161 | 31.6% |
| $120,000 | $20,000 | $2,826 | $3,533 | $6,359 | 31.8% |
| $180,000 | $20,000 | $1,094 | $3,735 | $4,829 | 24.1% |
Two patterns stand out. First, once your salary puts you in the 22% or 24% bracket, side profit costs roughly 30% in federal tax, more than a typical full-time freelancer pays on average. Second, at high salaries the percentage drops again, because the salary already maxed out Social Security and only the 2.9% Medicare part is left.

You can make quarterly estimated payments like a full-time freelancer (see 2026 due dates). But with a W-2 job, there’s often a simpler route: ask your employer to withhold more.
- On Form W-4, Step 4(c) lets you add a flat extra amount of withholding per paycheck. Step 4(a) lets you list other income so the payroll system withholds for it.
- Extra withholding covers self-employment tax too. It all goes toward your total federal tax.
- Under IRS Publication 505, withholding is treated as paid evenly throughout the year, even if you increase it in November. A late-year estimated payment doesn’t get that treatment, which makes withholding a good way to catch up and avoid underpayment penalties.
Example: $80,000 salary and $10,000 of side profit, paid biweekly (26 paychecks). The table says about $3,049 of extra tax, or roughly $117 more per paycheck through Step 4(c). If you start partway through the year, divide by the paychecks left.
Do you need to worry about penalties?
You generally avoid the underpayment penalty if your withholding and estimated payments cover the smaller of 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s (110% if last year’s AGI was over $150,000), or if you’ll owe less than $1,000 at filing. A small side hustle on top of a well-withheld salary may stay under $1,000. A bigger one usually won’t. See the safe harbor rule and the safe harbor calculator.
Side hustle tax checklist
- Report all of it. For payments made in 2026, clients only send a 1099-NEC once they pay you $2,000 or more, but all side income is taxable. See 2026 1099 thresholds.
- Deduct real expenses on Schedule C: software, supplies, a share of your phone, business mileage (mileage calculator). At a ~30% marginal rate, each $100 of expenses saves about $30.
- Keep side money separate, even if it’s just a second checking account.
- Revisit mid-year if the side income grows. Deciding whether to go full time? Read side hustle vs full-time freelance.
FAQ
How much should I set aside from side hustle income?
If your salary puts you in the 22% or 24% bracket, set aside about 30% of side profit for federal tax, plus your state rate. With a lower salary (12% bracket), about 23% is typical in 2026.
Do I have to pay self-employment tax on a side hustle?
Yes, once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400. If your W-2 salary is above the $184,500 Social Security wage base, only the 2.9% Medicare part applies.
Can I pay side hustle taxes through my paycheck?
Yes. Increase withholding with Form W-4 (Step 4(c) for a flat extra amount per paycheck). Withholding is treated as paid evenly through the year, which can help avoid underpayment penalties.
Is side hustle income under $600 or $2,000 taxable?
Yes. The $2,000 figure (for 2026 payments) only decides whether a client must send a 1099-NEC. All income is reportable, and SE tax applies once net earnings reach $400.
