The short answer: at typical freelance incomes, federal tax on 1099 profit usually lands between 17% and 27% in 2026, plus your state’s income tax. The long answer depends on your profit (not your gross), your filing status, and any other income. Here’s the math, and a table you can use.

In short: How much tax you pay on 1099 income in 2026 at $30k–$200k of profit, single and married, with SE tax, brackets and QBI explained.

The two federal taxes on 1099 income

  1. Self-employment tax: 15.3% × 92.35% of net profit, or about 14.13% of profit. The 12.4% Social Security part applies only up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, including any W-2 wages.
  2. Federal income tax: your profit, minus half of SE tax, minus the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married filing jointly in 2026), minus the QBI deduction (up to 20%), run through the 2026 brackets.

Profit means gross 1099 income minus business expenses. Every $1,000 of legitimate expenses cuts your tax by roughly $250–$400. See freelance expense categories.

The married figures assume the freelancer is the only earner. If your spouse has a salary, your 1099 profit is taxed at your household’s top bracket, so the percentage will be higher. The 1099 tax calculator has a W-2 wages field for that, and side hustle taxes with a W-2 job shows the numbers.

Three things the table shows

  • SE tax is the bigger bill below about $150,000. Most freelancers are surprised that income tax is the smaller of the two.
  • The percentage rises slowly. Going from $75,000 to $100,000 of profit adds about $6,900 of tax, roughly 27.5% of the extra $25,000.
  • Above the wage base, SE tax flattens. Past $184,500 of net SE earnings, only the 2.9% Medicare part continues, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax above $200,000 single / $250,000 joint.

Add your state

Most states tax self-employment profit as ordinary income. Nine (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming) don’t tax it at all. See 1099 taxes in no-income-tax states. For other states, adding your state’s effective rate on top of the table is a reasonable first estimate. If your state has a flat rate, 1099 taxes in flat-tax states lists the official 2026 rates.

Turning this into a savings habit

  1. Find your row, and add your state rate.
  2. Move that percentage of every payment into a separate tax account when it arrives.
  3. Pay quarterly: 2026 due dates. To avoid penalties without guessing, use the safe harbor rule.

How the $75,000 single row is calculated

  • SE tax: $75,000 × 0.9235 × 15.3% = $10,597
  • AGI: $75,000 − $5,299 (half of SE tax) = $69,701
  • Minus the $16,100 standard deduction = $53,601; minus the QBI deduction ($10,720, capped at 20% of that figure) = $42,881 taxable
  • Income tax: 10% of $12,400 + 12% of $30,481 = $4,898
  • Total: $15,495, or 20.7% of profit
Not tax, legal, or financial advice. Figures use 2026 IRS brackets, standard deductions, and the SSA wage base, and are simplified: no credits (such as the child tax credit), no other income, no retirement contributions, no state or local tax. Your actual tax may differ. Confirm with a qualified professional.

FAQ

How much tax do I pay on $50,000 of 1099 income?

If $50,000 is your profit and you’re single with no other income, federal tax in 2026 is about $9,700 (roughly $7,065 SE tax plus $2,667 income tax), or 19.5% of profit, plus any state tax.

Is 1099 income taxed at 30%?

Usually less at the federal level. For single filers with $30,000–$200,000 of profit, the federal total is about 17–27%. With state tax, or a spouse’s salary pushing you into higher brackets, 30% is possible.

Do I pay tax on 1099 gross or net?

Net. SE tax and income tax apply to profit after business expenses, not to the gross amount on your 1099 forms.

What is the self-employment tax rate for 2026?

15.3% (12.4% Social Security up to $184,500 of combined earnings, plus 2.9% Medicare), applied to 92.35% of net profit.
