How we calculate

  • Net profit = 1099 income − business expenses.
  • Self-employment tax = 12.4% Social Security on 92.35% of profit (only up to the $184,500 2026 wage base, minus any W-2 wages) + 2.9% Medicare on all of it. Under $400 of net earnings: $0.
  • Adjusted gross income = profit + W-2 wages − half of SE tax. Taxable income = AGI − the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household) − QBI deduction.
  • QBI deduction (if included) = 20% × (profit − half of SE tax), capped at 20% of taxable income, applied only when taxable income is at or below $201,750 ($403,500 joint).
  • Federal income tax uses the 2026 IRS brackets. We report only the extra tax your 1099 income adds on top of any W-2 wages.
  • Additional Medicare tax = 0.9% of SE earnings above $200,000 ($250,000 joint, $125,000 separate), reduced by W-2 wages.
  • State tax = your rate × profit (a rough flat estimate). Quarterly payment = total ÷ 4.

Not tax, legal, or financial advice. This is an educational 2026 estimate for a sole proprietor. It ignores credits (like the child tax credit), itemized deductions, retirement contributions, the self-employed health insurance deduction, local taxes, and state-specific rules, any of which can change your bill. Frequently asked questions

How much tax do you pay on 1099 income in 2026?

Two federal layers: self-employment tax (15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, with the 12.4% Social Security part stopping at $184,500 for 2026) plus regular income tax at your bracket (10% to 37%). Add state income tax where it applies. With the example inputs above ($85,000 of income, $10,000 of expenses, single, no state tax), the total is about $15,500, or 21% of profit.

What percentage of 1099 income should I set aside?

Many freelancers set aside 25–30% of each payment, but the right figure depends on profit, filing status, other income, and state. The “Set aside from each payment” line above works it out from your own numbers.

Do I pay taxes on 1099 income in Texas or Florida?

You still owe federal income tax and self-employment tax. Texas, Florida, and seven other states have no state income tax on wages or self-employment income, so set the state rate to 0%.

Does this include the QBI deduction?

Yes, as an option. It applies the 20% qualified business income deduction below the 2026 threshold ($201,750 of taxable income, or $403,500 joint). Above that the rules get complicated, so the calculator leaves it out and tells you.

Is the 1099 tax calculator accurate for 2026?

It uses the 2026 brackets, standard deduction, and QBI thresholds from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 and the 2026 Social Security wage base from the SSA. It’s still a simplified estimate, not a tax return.
